How big is a 6-yard skip?

Use these guide measurements to check the space you have.

Approximate 6-yard skip dimensions
Length3.1 m (about 10 ft 2 in)
Width1.75 m (about 5 ft 9 in)
Height1.2 m (about 3 ft 11 in)
How much it holds6 cubic yards — about 4.59 m³
Useful forRenovation and building projects

Dimensions are approximate and vary by supplier. Check the exact skip measurements before booking. The delivery lorry needs extra room to reach and lift the skip.

Will it fit on your drive?

Measure the space where the skip will stand, then check gates, parked cars and overhead cables. Leave room to load it and keep paths and doors clear. A skip that fits through a gap does not mean the lorry can get through.

What about heavy waste?

The yard size tells you how much space is inside, not how much weight the skip can carry. Tell us about soil, bricks or concrete so the allowed load can be checked.

The right waste. In the right place.

These are starting points for the booking conversation. The operator must approve your exact waste and load.

Usually worth discussing

  • Timber, cardboard and suitable packaging
  • Garden trimmings and non-hazardous vegetation
  • Suitable household and renovation waste
  • Declared soil, bricks and rubble, within an agreed weight limit

Keep out of an ordinary mixed load

  • Asbestos, chemicals, liquid paint and oils
  • Gas bottles, batteries and electrical appliances
  • Tyres and other items needing specialist arrangements
  • Undeclared plasterboard, mattresses or upholstered seating

Make room for the delivery lorry.

Delivery planning belongs in the site briefing. Give the driver’s contact the entrance details, any time restrictions and a clear placement point, with room left for collection.

  • Width and heightMeasure gates and note overhanging branches, cables and low entrances.
  • Surface and turningExplain slopes, soft ground, covers and any tight turn. Ask about suitable surface protection.
  • The return journeyKeep the approach open for collection and do not move the skip yourself.

Your skip hire questions, answered.

How much will my skip cost?

A trade quote needs a waste plan: materials, estimated load, site address and collection or exchange needs. Call 0330 912 9966 to discuss those details before booking.

How long can I keep the skip?

If work happens in stages, explain that before booking. Agree when the container is needed, how collection is requested and whether an exchange can be arranged.

Can I fill it above the sides?

No. Keep everything at or below the marked fill line and within the agreed load. If the pile is larger than expected, call to discuss the next step rather than overfilling.

Will a small skip fit through a small gate?

A site entrance that admits a van may not suit the skip vehicle. Discuss gate openings, turning space and any restrictions before giving a delivery instruction.
